With the lowest average household income many community members does not have the purchasing power to access healthy affordable food, therefore they either skip a meal or purchase cheap high calorie low nutrient foods. Leading to numerous health challenges that includes high rates of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases/conditions, and cancer. Mākeke Waiʻanae is a farmers market that perpetuates a social, economic and intellectual space for community members, and vendors to access an equitable and sustainable farmers market.
